Bringing cosmic perspective to life

In a world where space feels scarce—whether in our schedules, minds, or daily lives—Marjolijn van Heemstra’s book offers a fresh perspective by zooming out to the vastness of the universe. I had the opportunity to help bring her vision to life by designing the cover, creating illustrations, and crafting the layout for this project, capturing both the sense of wonder and the expansiveness that the book explores.

Visualizing the duality

The central illustration features an astronaut floating in space, their helmet cleverly doubling as a fishbowl. Inside, a fish is trapped, symbolizing our own enclosed, pressured lives—always caught up in our little bubbles. Outside, a second fish swims freely through the vastness of space, unburdened by time, expectations, or schedules.
